MLK Day 2012

MLK Day 2012 was a success! We cleared out the book cases, cleaned the book cases, and started painting them a wonderful blue! We also got plenty of book sorted, and some donated books processed!

We will be planning a few smaller volunteer events in the next few months to finish the painting, and to go through the book collection again. Weeding a library is a lot harder than it sounds!!

The day begins! All the book cases empty!

Rowen students who came out on their day off to help!

This little guy was so proud of himself - though I'm sure mom won't be pleased about the paint on his shirt!

 Book sorting.

Books to keep in the library!

New color on the book shelves!

The corner in front of the librarian's desk!

 New and old colors!

All cleared out and ready for paint!

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped!

Special thanks to:

Site Visit

Today we had a successful site visit at Rowen School! I met with two trustees from a family foundation that I applied to for funding for Rowen's library.

They saw the library and the school, which was great. They were impressed that the library space was so big - alot of schools have tiny rooms designated as the library.

We won't hear from them until January however (because that's when the whole board meets). But it was a great morning, and a good first site visit experience for me!

Tomorrow I am meeting with the director of libraries in the School District - should be a great meeting - I already have a list of about 20 questions to ask of her, so there will be more updates here tomorrow!

The Search Continues

I spoke to a representative from a local grant-giving Foundation this afternoon. She was very interested in Library Build's mission, and our work with Rowen.

Just one flaw: we need more board members!

I'll admit that I am not the very best at networking or connecting people to my mission. One of the pieces of advice that Joe McBride gave me before he passed away was that I needed to do the work, while someone else needed to be the spokesman. Pretty much true! Ha! (Anybody?)

So I put up a posting on Bridgestar this afternoon for Board Members. Let's see if I get any good responses! You can check it out here:

For those reading this blog, please email me if you are interested, or if you know anyone in the area who might be interested. I am willing to talk to anyone with a clear interest in public education.

Thanks!
